“WE CAN’T TAKE the drug to Stage Three, Rachel. It increases suicide risk in young adults,” says Kai, his voice distorted by my car speaker.

Fuck. I slam on the brakes, just in time to avoid sending a yoga mom flying through the intersection with her oat milk matcha latte. I need that drug to be a blockbuster, or Hyena Laugh Lucas will get my promotion. Is it really such a big deal if a drug for depression slightly increases suicide risk? If someone’s taking the drug, odds are they’re already suicidal. I mean, if we save several thousand people, and lose a few, I call that a win.

“Did any trial participants actually kill themselves?” I ask.

Kai pauses. I can hear him clicking at his computer. “Two.”

“Those poor kids,” I say, because that’s what a neurotypical person would say. Those poor kids are fucking up my trial. “How do we know they killed themselves because of the drug?”

“Ostensibly other causes were ruled out.”

“Ostensibly, Kai. So we really don’t know. And that is a very small number of participants who had adverse effects.”

“But the adverse effect was death.”
